Downtown Revitalization: A New Vision for San Juan Meeting to be held
Redevelopment on a Local Level The San Juan Economic Development Corporation (EDC) will hold a public/community meeting at 6pm on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at the Basilica Cafe. The purpose of the meeting will be to showcase the progress on the Downtown Revitalization Project. The Downtown Revitalization Project was initiated by the San Juan EDC as a way to spur community enhancements and commercial revitalization in Downtown San Juan. Components of the revitalization plan include infrastructure, roadway, sidewalk, landscaping and façade improvements and enhancements on Nebraska Street between US 83 and Business 83. This public meeting is a visualization exercise that will provide the EDC with insight as to how the community would like to see downtown San Juan develop”, said Miki McCarthy, executive director of the San Juan EDC. “We encourage our San Juan citizens and business owners to participate in this process.” Participation from the community is strongly encouraged as it will provide the framework by which the plan recommendations will be developed. The public meeting, facilitated by the EDC’s redevelopment consultant Edminster Hinshaw Russ & Associates, will provide an overview of the revitalization project, key components of the revitalization plan as well as a interactive visual preference survey that will allow residents to describe how they see the future of San Juan. This meeting is the first of two public meetings designed to receive public input and involvement on the revitalization plan. An additional meeting on the revitalization plan will also occur in late March 2010 and will profile preliminary recommendations based on the comments received at the February meeting. The San Juan Downtown Revitalization Plan is being done in three phases. An executive summary of Phase One, which included a summary of existing conditions, can be requested at info@sanjuanedc.com prior to the February meeting.
